Development Pieces
Development Pieces
- These are for four development pieces i have designed. Getting me here hasnt been the easiest as some of my research which i have collected has sometimes contridicted itself. But but narrowing out the points i have come up with these four designs.
- These have been designed with my research in mind, the shape of net that i have chossen means that these one are not glueless, but with a little tinkering i will be able to change the said glue tap for a foldable tap shape. Making this glueless as to my research. The top will also be changed to acomodate a small toggle, So the top can be closed and reused if neccessary. Holes madeto be put in from the side will house the two string handles so this can be carried as a gift.
- The colours that i have used are very minimal and are of a dark nature. This is all comming from my own research as most of the packages i liked where dark in colour and very simple but brillaint design. Using just lines in some it gives the packaging some defintion as it will draw the buyer to think whats inside the package.
- Two windows will be showing off the two bottles and cardboard will be hiding the condement inside. This is so the viewer is still able to see the product but not nessearely touch anything else. As the buyer will be able to see my research into what people want when buying a packaging will become a factor.
- I will be taking one of these through to make my final packaging which will hold a small amount of information on the back but will show what the condement will be inside, The text will be simplar to the Wye Valley Brewery own font. Also making the changes with the top and side of the box to make it gluesless will be done to also make the package safe for the product inside

Wye Valley Brewery
These are some images from the Wye Valley Brewery webiste that i thought would represent what type of company there are. They are using a very olde english sort of style and everything is very clean lined.
This is what my designes are based on with all the clean lines and nutral colours. I was thinking of usign the women logo that they have allready used but decided not to as it would fit in with any of my clean cut designs.
Sustainable Inks
Sustainable Inks
After all the considerations i have taken into looking into many fields of my research i havent looked into what happens after i have made and designed the packaging.
More detiled, printing. Using certain inks i have found are not bio degradable, This means that you can spend as much time makeing your packaging green friendly but when it comes to priting you are going to have to be very carefull. Using normal inks like mineral inks isnt good for the environment. But by using some vegitable inks you are still helping the planet.
The paragraph below tells me a short piece on what some inks are used for and why. But more importantly in the article on the webpage is says where not to use the inks. I found this helpful as if i where to take my design to a printers i am sure i will now choose the right inks.
Although it might not seem obvious, it is important to think about your print options at the design stage. For example, by reducing areas of ink coverage in your design (eg. solid colours and dark full bleed photographs) you will use less ink. This will also make your product easier to recycle.
Also, brief your designers to avoid using fluorescent colours which require petroleum-based inks. Until recently metalics have only been available as petroleum-based inks but a vegetable oil version has just come onto the market so ask your printer if they’re using these yet.
Other important ink considerations:
Heavy metals such as barium, copper and zinc are contained in certain pigments and can result in environmental and worker health hazards. As mentioned above, metallic and fluorescent inks are the most toxic and do not decompose as easily as other inks. The heavy metal component causes problems by leaching into groundwater.
Few modern sheet-fed inks contain non-renewable mineral (petroleum) oils but heatset web inks still contain 30-35% mineral oil – think about whether the inks you use are made from non-renewable sources.
Soya – These days, instead of containing mineral (petroleum) oil, inks typically contain three parts linseed to one part soya. By using these vegetable oil based inks you’re reducing environmental hazards and avoiding using a non-renewable resource.

Why Cardboard
Why Cardboard
My reasons for using caardboard are because its durable, light, strong and can protect items inside a box. My research has told me this so i will be making my box out of this material.
But this is an article explain why buisnesses use cardboard.
The benefits to those utilizing cardboard packaging are hard to overstate. The material is light and able to be made quickly and cheaply. Often, cardboard packaging is made locally or regionally, providing good-paying jobs and helping the local economy. In fact, entire companies exist with the sole purpose of providing cardboard boxes, cardboard bins and other types of products to manufacturers.
Cardboard packaging has also seen a resurgence in popularity in recent years. Some consumers, frustrated by the difficulty of dealing with plastic bubble wrap have been demanding a change. Companies are starting to listen. Amazon.com, for example, has announced it is opting for cardboard packaging for popular toys whenever it is available.
In addition to toys, cardboard packaging is used for a number of other types of consumer goods. Most televisions come wrapped in cardboard containers as a first line of defense, for example. Although the TVs may also have other types of protection within the packaging, the cardboard box plays a vital role in that system of protection.

EPSRC News Release
Wednesday 17 February 2010
Food packaging and other disposable plastic items could soon be composted at home along with organic waste thanks to a new sugar-based polymer.
It is being developed at Imperial College London by a team of Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council scientists led by Dr Charlotte Williams. The search for greener plastics, especially for single use items such as food packaging, is the subject of significant research worldwide. “It’s spurred on not only from an environmental perspective, but also for economic and supply reasons,” explains Dr Williams.

This was an article i found that is based on a degradable plastic. Its made from sugars and can be used with food and drink.
I was deciding whiether i would be able to use a substance like this for my packaging.
My conclusion was no, this was due to the fact of it would cost a lot more then then product is worth. So wouldnt be a great idea to purcase.

Buy Products With Less Packaging
Less Packaging
This article below is all about explain why we should not buy product with so much packaging used on them. But by looking into ways of making a product safe with a minimal amount of materials used.
I have put this in as i wanted as one of my first few ideas to create packaging for each item sepratly. By when read the bit highlighted below, i though instead why not use less packaging and still come out with a great looking outcome by making it for a batch instead of sigular.
There are also some great tips that can be taken out to start creating a piece of packaging and not hit any snags on the way.

Everything we buy seems to come in disposable packaging—but that doesn’t mean we have to accept it. By simply choosing products that use less packaging and recyclable packaging, you can make a big impact. Packaging has increased dramatically over the last half century and now makes up the largest share of municipal solid waste (MSW). Even if Americans were recycling everything they could today, there would remain packaging materials—namely certain plastics—for which there are few or no established recycling programs, leaving you no choice but to toss it in the garbage. The vast majority of recycling programs only accept PET (type 1) and HDPE (type 2) beverage containers. This means that types 3-7, including yogurt tubs, condiment bottles, shampoo bottles, etc. are tossed into landfills by the billions every day. When you can, choose recyclables—and recycle them—instead. Learn more about recycling codes at our plastic guide. | ||||||||||||
| Take Action / Next Steps | ||||||||||||
| • Evaluate a product’s packaging using these simple questions – Is it without packaging or minimally packaged? – Is the packaging marked as containing recycled material? – Is the packaging material readily recyclable (i.e. aluminum, steel, glass, unwaxed paper, PET or HDPE plastic.)? • Reuse packaging: Containers, such as yogurt tubs, can be great for storage. Read up on safe plastic use. • Use bulk food stations where you can fill reusable containers with grocery items from nuts and grains to cooking oils. • Encourage producer responsibility: – Request that suppliers reduce packaging and use packaging that is compostable, recycled or recyclable. Read about the move towards eco-packaging . – Support Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) initiatives such as the National Beverage Producer Responsibility Act of 2003, S. 1867 • Reduce takeout packaging by setting a goal to pack lunches and eat meals at home more often. When you do take-out, refuse the chopsticks and napkins and use your own. | ||||||||||||
Second Usage 2
Second Uses
These are some other great second uses which i found intelegent. They are not as practicle as some others but can be used in every home instead of just aiming it at a particle age group.

Second Usage
Design Roundup: Dual Use Packaging Reduces Waste
By Gretchen HookerWorldChanging Team, 8 Dec 08
Most of us are aware that product packaging is a largely unnecessary source of waste, but the scale of the problem may still come as a surprise. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, packaging accounts for the greatest share (32 percent) of all the waste generated in the U.S. In the EU, packaging waste accounts for about 20 percent of the weight, and 40 percent of the volume of municipal waste. Not only does that packaging represent a significant volume of wasted material, but it’s also money out of consumers' pockets—twice. We pay for excess packaging first as part of the sticker price of a given product, and secondly in disposal fees for getting rid of the empty boxes, Styrofoam, and plastic wrappers.
Packaging that is designed for multiple uses is a solution that can both add value to products and help reduce their environmental footprint.
Fuseproject’s design for Y Water got a great deal of attention from design blogs earlier this year as a prime example of just this sort of dual use packaging. The organic children’s beverage is packaged in 4-lobed bottles that interlock with natural rubber connectors to become a building set when empty. And when no longer in use, the bottles can be recycled.
Second uses for pacakging
Having a second use for pacakging is a great idea as its using the cradle to cradle scheme. These pieces shown above are some ideas which people have created to reuse a piece of packaging again, A t.v. stand and a lamp shape. Shown below is another example of this by using games.
This is where i have had the idea of using a chess board as a second use for my packaging. The Box i have created is large enough to place a drawing of a chess board and with room to have the pieces. With second uses involved in a design you can sometimes loose an aspect of design. But by usign only one side of my box and the safety protector for the condement i am able to Use very little cardboard for a multiple useage. I am also planning on introducing checkers aswel. This fits in with my target auidence as they are the age group playing these sort of game.

Recycling Rates for Europe
Packaging Forcast
This graph is showing how much each country is aiming to recycle at the end of 2011. We are aiming to recyle arounf 55-80% of our waste.
Britain is aiming high as we have high persentage of our waste going to land fills, This is because we are importing so many goods that we dont have anywhere to put the rubbish.
Recyclable packaging can be a huge persentage on to that forcast as the cardboard i will be using for my box can be recycled.
Packaging Design
Egg Packaging
This shows me here that small amount of packaging can be used and still look great. This small egg holder does use glue but only to its minimal useage. The eggs are protected well so you are able to transport them safely. On the website they are other inspirational pieces of packaging that i have looked at. Most are using cardboard as there primary mterial, this is because of my earlirt research into why cardboard is useful. I can take into accont from this piece of research that minimlist design maybe the better option to take as it uses less materials and better thinking of what to put on the design.

Recycle Cardboard
Cardboard Recycling
Why do we need to recycle cardboard boxes?
Over 85% of all products that are sold in the United States are packed in cardboard. Now multiply that number with all countriestogether, that’s a lot of cardboard, being used. Where does all this cardboard come from? It comes from a raw material called pulp which is extracted from trees. Since there are a limited number of trees in the world and we need every last one of them to preserve the oxygen level, reduce the carbon dioxide level and help in the rain formation cycle in the world, it makes sense to try and cut down on the amount of cardboard we use, obviously we cannot stop packing products so the only viable solution left is to reuse the cardboard in the most efficient and cost effective way.
We all know manufacturing is no friend to the environment, every process in the manufacturing of cardboard produces tones of hazardous gasses which are blown in to the air every day, and it is our duty to save the earth for our sack and for the coming generations. By recycling ideally what we are doing is reducing the production process into half, so if they were going to pump out 50tones of hazardous gasses now they will pump out 25tones it is still a lot but recycling definitely helps. Manufacturing companies are adapting greener ways of production which emit less chemical waste so they are doing their part, let’s do ours.
When you have a cardboard box that is either damped by liquids or any other solution or chemical, do not recycle these kinds of cardboard boxes. The reason for not recycling this kind of cardboard is that once they have been damped they tend to release chemicals from the moisture which can be unsafe if they are stored in a compact space for a long time.
http://cardboardrecycling.org/
This statistic of 85% of american products and using cardboard was alarming but is has given me a greater understanding on what material i will eventually use in my final design.
There is a problem with cardboard boxes is though. And that is they get wet and if they do they are very difficult to get dry again. As it says here you are not able to recycle the box because of this. So if they is a spillage container i will create the box will loose it recycle purpose. So using cardboard does have its dissadvantages.
Inventive ways of cradle to cradle
This is an inventive way to reuse packaging. I like this because its allmost to simple to not think of, This could be in my final design because i will be able to hit cradle to cradle on the head. prolonging a packaging piece to go to waaste is a great way to save dumps filling up. Just by using packaging over and over again.

Packaging and branding are different
Branding packaging design can take this a step further by creating unique packaging for a brand, in place of the all-too-ubiquitous options typically available, such as athe common tin can. In this book, we will explore how branding can be extended through the creation of new packaging shapes, forms and containers, which ultimately help to differentiate a brand.
What does this debate mean for those involved in pacakging design? To create truly effective packaged brands. Designers need to consider how both packaging and the brand can be devetailed together ina way that mutually and effectively serves both the packaging and branding goals of a product. Branding packaging design creates something greater than the sum of its parts.
Some would argue that packaging is branding; that packaging represents the manifestation of the brand and the brand lives through and is enlivened by the packaging. For the end user, packaging is part of a product, from which to gain confidence in and develop loyality towards the product. To generate such brand loyality represents the packaging designers real challenge.
What is pacaking design ?
Pacakign desisgn is one of the key elements of a marketing strategy for a product as it is the visual face that will be promoted, recognised adn sought out by the consumer.

This piece of research is telling me that trying to use the image of teh brand allready excisting is a great way to allmost kickstart your design inspiration as you now have a starting point. Letting the brand identity and the colours and even possible the shape of the packaging all itermingiling in themselves is a great idea and i will definatly be using this piece of research in my final idea.
There is only one problem with this is that using the colours of the logo might not fit in with my target audience. so i will use this in my final product but maybe not the the extent that i actually should.

Introduction: what packaging is about
Packaging is exceptionally important and is omnopresent in our world. "Virtually everything grown or manufactured is packaged in some fashion. It is necessary for our modern lifestyles. It is decorative. It is a salesman. It is a protective screen".
- It must protect the product from physical, chemical and microbiological invasion.
- It must provide a medium or presenting advertising messages and other important information to consumers, This is where concept research can help identify the specific information that most strongly influences consumers.
- It is one of the greatest influences on a consumers decision to try a product.

When reading this piece i found it very helpful to my understanding on why packaging is used to sell the product. The 3 key points mentioned above are the more refined summerys of what needs to be done when designing a good piece of packaing. Protection of the most products has to be your first consideration as if you cannot give the buyer the product in a safe condition then why desing the packaging in the first place.
The way concept research can help you when designing is where you have to know who your audince is. Because if you create a great piece an find out you havent taken into account a critical piece of evidence then your product will not sell as you have aged it at a deifferent audince then you should have.
Reading the way the packaging design is allmost based on how much the actuall product cost was interesting as i thought that this didnt happen. Just becuase a product cost a pound compared to its rivals which are ten times more expensive. I am going to not take into account of this part of my researh as i dont want to design something just based on the price.
